I have been blessed to have worked with eminent scientists, inspirational Integrative Medicine medical doctors, prestigious massage teachers, amazing natural health practitioners and esteemed Ayurvedic, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Tibetan doctors and have witnessed patients recovering from a wide range of disease from asthma to cancer using Complementary medicine and therapies.
From the science perspective, witnessing the success of Complementary and Alternative Medicines rather than believing in any quackery is a personal value of mine. We can be limited in our thinking if we believe that only one system of medicine is correct. Every system of medicine has its limitations and so a strategic integrative approach rather “mix and match of therapies” is ‘best–practice’ approach in treating numerous ailments.
As the demand for complementary medicine grows so has the heated debate between the sceptics and those who embrace the integration of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) into mainstream healthcare. Whilst our current scientific models focuses on the ‘homogeneity of results’, rather than the consideration of observational and empirical studies, this debate will continue. The one accomplishment we can learn from Traditional and Alternative medicine systems is that the ‘one size fits all’ hypothesis is now an outdated concept in clinical practice. We have seen this shift evolve in current medical practice with the genetic profiling of tumours and the development of patient specific pharma drug design.
